What does a sports floor cost?

Anyone requesting a sports floor for the first time wants to hear one number. That number does not exist, and a supplier who quotes one without asking questions is leaving something out. The price of a seamless synthetic sports floor is determined by five factors.

1. The subfloor. The biggest cost item nobody sees. A level, dry and pressure-resistant subfloor makes installation predictable. A subfloor with moisture problems, cracks or height differences requires preparation, and that work sits underneath the floor you eventually see. In renovation projects the existing floor matters too: sometimes it can serve as a base, sometimes it has to come out.

2. The system. A sports floor is a build-up of layers: an elastic base layer, a top layer and a finish with line marking. The sports function determines the build-up. A school gymnasium requires different shock absorption than a top-class sports centre hosting national competition. Heavier requirements mean more material and greater layer thickness, and that shows in the price per square metre.

3. Surface area and shape. More square metres reduce the price per metre, because start-up costs remain the same. Shape counts as well: a rectangular hall without obstacles is faster to install than a space with recesses, equipment pits and door sections.

4. Standards and certification. A sports hall floor that must comply with EN 14904 is tested on shock absorption, ball bounce and more. That assurance costs something in material and control, and delivers something bigger: a floor that is demonstrably fit for the use you are buying it for. For municipalities and education, certification is almost always a requirement in the tender.

5. Planning and aftercare. A floor that has to be installed during a school holiday demands tighter planning than a project with room to breathe. And costs do not stop at handover: a seamless sports floor lasts 15 to 25 years, provided it is periodically maintained. Comparing on purchase price alone ignores most of the floor's life.
