EN 14904 explained: what a sports hall floor must comply with

Anyone building or renovating a sports hall encounters EN 14904 in virtually every specification. This article explains what the standard covers, which properties are tested and why certification is more than a formality.

EN 14904 is the European standard for indoor sports floors used for multiple sports. The standard exists because a sports floor has to do two conflicting things at once: absorb energy when an athlete lands, and return energy when a ball bounces. A floor that is only soft plays slowly and increases injury risk during pivoting movements. A floor that is only hard plays fast but absorbs nothing. The standard guards that balance.

What is tested? EN 14904 assesses a sports floor on a series of properties, four of which form the core. Shock absorption: how much landing energy the floor takes up, decisive for joint load. Vertical deformation: how far the floor yields under load. Ball bounce: how truly a ball returns compared to a rigid surface, decisive for ball sports. And friction: enough grip to push off, enough glide to pivot safely. The standard also sets requirements for wear resistance, gloss and material emissions.

Classes, not a grade. The standard divides floors into classes based on shock absorption and deformation. Which class is appropriate depends on use. A play hall for young children requires different properties than a competition hall for national-level volleyball. That is exactly how a specification should be read: not "the best class", but the right class for the sports function.

Certification in practice. A certificate tests the system, but the floor that ends up in the hall is only as good as its installation. That is why Herculan keeps the entire chain in-house: our sports flooring systems are developed and produced in our own factory in Meerkerk and installed by our own teams.
